Workforce Management

The Shaw workforce development program meets a broad range of needs for all levels of construction personnel and provides a career path for new and developing construction professionals.  Shaw's workforce development program embraces community and academic organizations, providing a foundation of cooperation through local entities.  Employees enrolled in this training are recruited through multiple sources.  Training provides local entry-level workers with highly paid, marketable skills. It also includes opportunities for those with more advanced skills to participate in skills upgrade training while working for Shaw. The skills the craft employees receive from this training will result in improved project productivity, profitability and safety performance.

The Shaw craft training program uses the industry's standardized construction curriculum developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).  This curriculum know as "Contren" addresses the most fundamental job skills such as the entry level safety/core curriculum, as well as the most sophisticated skill level training associated with journey level craft professionals. Also included in Shaw's training program is an Instructor Certification Training Program (ICTP) which prepares the instructors to use the training materials, and a Craft Talent Management System (CTMS) that records trainees successes on an individual basis.  These successes are also recorded on the NCCER's Automated National Registry (ANR), providing each craftsman with a personalized training transcript available for review throughout the construction and maintenance industry.

The Shaw Workforce Development Plan provides the construction industry and adjoining labor shed with a workforce that has completed quality, accredited, objective training that will be utilized daily on the job site. Several areas that will reflect the positives are:

  • a safer work environment
  • increased workforce retention
  • providing an increase in the quality of work produced
  • reduction in time losses due to re-training and lack of job skills on the job site
  • ease of cross training of entry and advanced level craft workers to continue though different phases of project construction
  • development of new supervisors, and
  • the on-going development and strengthening of a foundational infrastructure for successful program delivery through partnerships with educational, governmental, civic and private entities.
