Health & Safety
Shaw's Health and Safety Department has more than 100 professionals experienced in dealing with the complex demands of emergency responses. These professionals have provided support services to a wide range of projects from facility disasters and emergencies. Our health and safety personnel include the following and are assigned depending on the project requirements:
- Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs)
- Certified Safety Professionals (CSPs)
- Certified Health Physicists (CHPs)
- Certified Occupational Safety and Health Technicians (OSHTs)
Health and safety professionals can support on-site operations and have experience integrating with the established Incident Command System (ICS) to provide additional support during disasters. Shaw personnel are trained in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements established in 29 CFR 1910.120. The initial 40-hour training is reinforced by daily site, tailgate safety meetings and the annual 8-hour refresher training.
Comprehensive site-specific health and safety plans are developed and tailored to each response. These plans detail the chemical, physical, and environmental hazards and the steps to protect the responders, clients, and public through the use of engineering controls, administrative procedures, and PPE. They range from the generically formatted plans available for relatively straightforward responses to the extremely complex and integrated plans, which encompass not only on-site concerns, but also outside emergency response organizations.
Shaw has a large inventory of state-of-the-art environmental monitoring instrumentation available for emergency responses to assess and protect the responding employees, and to begin perimeter surveillance to determine amount and magnitude of off-site releases. The extensive amount of stockpiled air monitoring equipment is supplemented by contracts with several nationwide air sampling instrument rental companies to ensure that adequate instrumentation is available.
Safety Record
Shaw is a nationally recognized leader in safety. Many of our contracts are awarded based upon our outstanding safety record and demonstrated safety competence.
Shaw's safety performance with OSHA recordable injuries and illnesses and Experience Modification Rates are significantly below the construction industry average-the industry most similar to Shaw's business.
This exceptional health and safety performance is achieved through the use of experienced personnel, established procedures, state-of-the-art air monitoring instrumentation, and training programs.
