Emergency Response & Recovery:
Health & Safety

Providing support services in response to disasters and emergencies, Shaw’s team of health and safety professionals includes the following:

  • Certified industrial hygienists
  • Certified safety professionals
  • Certified health physicists
  • Certified occupational safety and health technicians

Health and safety professionals can support on-site operations and have experience integrating with the established Incident Command System to provide additional support during disasters. Shaw personnel are trained in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response in compliance with OSHA requirements. The initial 40-hour training is reinforced by daily site safety meetings and the annual eight-hour refresher training.

Comprehensive site-specific health and safety plans can be developed and tailored to each response. These plans address chemical, physical or environmental hazards and protective steps that can be taken through the use of engineering controls, administrative procedures and personal protective equipment. They also range from relatively straightforward response plans to extremely complex and integrated plans that encompass on-site concerns as well as outside emergency response organizations.

Our large inventory of state-of-the-art environmental monitoring instrumentation is available to assess on-site conditions and begin perimeter surveillance to determine amount and magnitude of off-site releases. The extensive amount of stockpiled air monitoring equipment is supplemented by contracts with several nationwide air sampling instrument rental companies to ensure that adequate instrumentation is available.
