Shaw Announces South Rim Maintenance and Warehouse Facility at Grand Canyon National Park Awarded Prestigious LEED Certification

BATON ROUGE, La.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 2004--The Shaw Group Inc. (NYSE:SGR) today announced that the South Rim Maintenance and Warehouse Facility at the Grand Canyon National Park has been awarded the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The project was designed and constructed by Shaw's subsidiary, Shaw Beneco, Inc., under contract to the National Park Service (NPS). The LEED Green Building Rating System(R) certification program was initiated in 1998 by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to encourage and facilitate the design and construction of sustainable buildings.

The Grand Canyon project consisted of design and construction of five new buildings, including an office building, vehicle maintenance facility, warehouse, enclosed vehicle storage and covered storage on a fifteen-acre campus with access roads, parking, storage yard, utility corridor, and areas designated for future expansion. Design concepts focused on meeting functional needs while minimizing impacts on natural and cultural resources, and increasing operational efficiency. Renewable, recyclable, and reusable materials were used extensively in the project. The project incorporated several environmentally friendly specialty systems, including a system to use re-claimed water for sewage disposal and a natural gas re-fueling station for vehicles. Certification was achievable thanks to the collaborative efforts of extensive "bridging documents" prepared by the NPS Denver Service Center, as well as collaborative efforts of Shaw Beneco, Atkins-Benham Architects, and Park personnel.

The USGBC's LEED certification follows a rigorous application process. Of nearly 1,600 applications received since the inception of the LEED program, only 130 buildings have been awarded certification. The Grand Canyon project is Shaw's first LEED-certified building constructed as a Shaw design-build project. Additional information about the project is available on the USGBC site at https://www.usgbc.org/LEED/Project/project_list.asp

Diana Severs Ferguson, President of Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. said, "We are especially proud of attaining LEED certification for the Grand Canyon project. Shaw's capabilities in sustainable design and construction further exemplify our commitment to restoring and protecting the environment."
