New Nuclear Generation

AP1000®

Through our 20 percent ownership of Westinghouse, Shaw is building technologically advanced AP1000 nuclear power reactors at three plant sites in the U.S. and two plant sites in China.

The AP1000 Consortium was selected by the People’s Republic of China State Nuclear Power Technology Co. (SNPTC) to build four new nuclear power plants using Westinghouse’s AP1000 passive Generation III+ technology. This groundbreaking contract will provide a sustainable source of critically needed power generation for the People’s Republic of China.

In the U.S., Shaw and Westinghouse signed engineering, procurement and construction contracts with two clients for twin AP1000 units. Excavation began in 2009 on Units 3 and 4 at Georgia Power’s Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga., and on Units 2 and 3 at South Carolina Electric & Gas’ V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville, S.C. These four units are expected to enter commercial operation in the 2016 to 2019 time frame.

  • Successfully preparing preliminary and final safety analysis reports and environmental reports for 17 U.S. nuclear power plants for which we were the original engineer/constructor
  • Designing and receiving NRC approvals for several independent spent fuel storage installations
  • Preparing and receiving NRC approval for a first-of-a-kind construction authorization request and environmental report for the Department of Energy’s Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility
  • Being selected to support the AP1000 Combined Operating License Application preparation, as part of a consortium with Westinghouse
