One of Shaw’s core proprietary technologies is ethylene process technology. Ethylene is an olefin that serves as a base chemical of the petrochemical industry. Shaw is an established leader in the production of ethylene and its co-product, propylene. Since our first ethylene plant was built in 1941, we have designed and /or built more than 120 grassroots units, amounting to more than 30 percent of the world’s current operating capacity. Shaw-designed ethylene plants have a global reputation for lowest cost of ownership based on exceptionally high operational reliability, rapid startup and superior performance.

In addition to grassroots projects, Shaw applies advanced process technology and integration techniques through revamps and expansions that help owners maximize productivity of existing units. Many of these projects are for units designed by others.

A key component of Shaw ethylene technology is our advanced furnace technology. Shaw has designed and built the world’s largest ethane cracking furnace, operating at an impressive 1.5 MMTA, and the largest liquids cracking furnaces, producing more than 175 KTA of ethylene per furnace.


Shaw provides a wide range of services from conceptual studies through commissioning and startup. Shaw’s technology strength and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capabilities combine to minimize project and maintenance cost and maximize profit to our customers. Our services include the following:

  • Project-related studies: prospect evaluation and selection, feasibility, scheme development, option selection, cost reduction, optimization, budget cost, schedule definition and support documentation
  • Process design: full scheme development, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), overall material balances (OMB), specific energy consumption (SEC), plot plan, equipment list, definitive cost and schedule
  • Front-end engineering design (FEED): engineering definition to piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), layouts, long-lead requisitions and contract bid documents
