Yankee Stadium Station – New York
High traffic during 81 Yankee home games each year makes the Yankee Stadium Station in the Bronx a signature station, and as engineer of record, Shaw played an essential role in getting it up and running. Shaw finalized all engineering plans and specifications and provided construction support services, including shop drawing reviews and engineering field support, for the Metropolitan Transit Authority Metro-North Railroad.
Major elements of the station include track realignment to accommodate the construction of two high-level island platforms, elevators and elevator towers to provide pedestrian access from the platforms to the new 10,000-square-foot overhead mezzanine structure, and four new stairways. A translucent barrel roof with state-of-the-art information displays about real-time train status highlights the mezzanine structure. An undulating roof that reflects the rolling waves of Yankee fans tops the bridge overpass.
The project incorporates critical green elements such as natural ventilation and daylight. A 450-foot covered Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian overpass provides access from the new Yankee Stadium side.
Shaw’s innovative design-build solutions such as prefabricated elements were key in meeting crucial deadlines and project challenges, which included continuous, heavy railway traffic. The design-build team developed value engineering approaches based on the preliminary designs, saving considerable time and helping the team to meet an aggressive schedule.
